The act of "tying" has been believed to have the power to give shape to feelings and create connections. "Chura" means "beautiful" in Okinawa. The beautiful blue of the ocean and sky that connects the world is expressed through indigo dyeing. During the Ryukyu Kingdom era, dyeing and weaving techniques were introduced through maritime trade with Southeast Asia and China. These techniques developed into a unique culture, adapting to Okinawa's climate and environment. Despite the devastating damage caused by the ground battles of World War II, the efforts and passion of our ancestors have allowed the tradition to continue to this day. Inheriting these techniques, indigo plants grown naturally in Motobu Town, Okinawa Prefecture, are fermented, dyed by hand by dyers and weavers, and twisted together to form individual knots. "Chura Sangua" is a "story of blue" from Okinawa to you. Your small "bond" will be a big "step" in connecting this island's wonderful culture to the future. Ryukyu indigo, nurtured in Okinawa's strong sunlight and rich natural environment, is a traditional natural dye that has been loved by people since the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
The dye liquid, made by fermenting indigo leaves, is characterized by its gentle, deep blue color, which is achieved using only natural forces without the use of chemicals. Indigo dyeing gradually deepens in color as it is applied multiple times. In Japan, there is a long-standing culture in which the deep color of indigo dyed deeply is referred to as "brown = victory color." This color was considered auspicious for samurai during the Sengoku period, and was used on armor and flags in prayer for victory. This spirit has been passed down to the present day, and is said to be one of the origins of the "Samurai Blue" uniform of the Japanese national soccer team. Japan Blue, a symbol of Japan, has its roots in victory color, which has been layered over the brown color of Ryukyu indigo.
